uTata Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, an icon, a freedom fighter, a father and a hero would have celebrated his 100th birthday on the 18th of July 2018. In honour of his sacrifice and service to the nation, we celebrate Nelson Mandela Day annually, commemorating his compassionate spirit.

This year for Nelson Mandela Day, Plascon partnered with the eThekwini Municipality in Durban, to pay homage to the man that is the legacy, by sponsoring paint to invigorate important public spaces. Some of the public spaces which received a fresh coat of paint included the ablution facilities at the Drop-in centre on Margaret Mncadi Avenue and a mural of Mandela at the detour tunnel of the Port Natal Maritime Museum. Local artists, Andile Hlubi, Mfundo Zulu, Phumelele Malamela and Darren Badenhorst were commissioned to paint the mural of uTata Mandela, which stands as the centrepiece of the wall and will inspire motorists making use of Margaret Mncadi Avenue.

KZN Regional Manager, Sharon Madanlal, said ”Plascon was honoured and humbled to be a part of such an important day in our history as South Africans. Nelson Mandela played a pivotal role in bringing our country together and creating change and unity that will last for decades to come. At Plascon we believe in being catalysts for change, this is reflected in our Designed for Life philosophy. Through this beautification initiative we encourage people to take pride of place and this is a fitting tribute to the father of our nation in living colour. Through this iniative, we hope to inspire through colour and act as ambassadors of the amazing – just like uTata Mandela.”
