Step by step guide: How to apply broken gold leaf

Add a touch of glam to your walls in broken gold leaf. It’s easier than you think!

BASE WALL COLOUR

Plascon Cashmere, Double Velvet or Polvin in In The Mood (O6-E2-3).

YOU NEED

  • Imbali Art metal leaf glue
  • Raw umber universal stain
  • Gold metal leaf (not real gold)
  • Sponge roller and tray
  • 2 x 100 mm brushes
  • Turpentine and a rag
  • Plascon Woodcare Interior Ultra Varnish in Imbuia

STEP 1:

Add a little raw umber universal stain to the metal leaf glue and roll onto the wall.

STEP 2:

Leave to dry for 15 minutes and then, while wearing gloves, apply the gold metal leaf to the surface taking care to apply random-sized pieces and leaving small gaps in between them.

STEP 3:

Rub the surface with a dry brush or a cloth dampened with turpentine to remove any excess leaf. Be warned, this is the messy bit!

STEP 4:

Working in pairs and keeping a wet edge, apply stained varnish to the surface using the 100mm brushes. Dab away brush marks with the cloth, and allow to dry.
