Often an overlooked part of your home’s décor, the humble cornice is given star status with a shaded paint effect that creates the illusion of extra space.

YOU NEED

PAINT: Plascon Double Velvet in White and Plascon Cashmere in Fresh Linen (Y3-E2-3).

OTHER: RhinoLite QuickCornice, cornice glue, Plascon Acrylic Scumble (GSL 2), one large container, two large brushes, a bucket of water, a piece of cloth and water.

PREPARATION

Cut the polystyrene cornice to size. Apply two coats of Plascon Double Velvet White to the cornice, allowing the paint to dry between coats. Mix one part scumble glaze with one part Fresh Linen and one part water.

GET THE LOOK

STEP 1

Paint-1

Apply the glue to the cornice and gently press it into place on the wall. Fill any gaps with the glue.

STEP 2

Paint-2

Dampen the surface of the dried paint with water. Use the first brush to apply the scumble-and-paint mixture to the cornice. Using the second dry brush, tap the surface of the wet scumble-and-paint mixture in a stippling motion to get rid of the brush marks and produce a suede or smooth effect.

STEP 3

Paint-3

Use a small piece of cloth to carefully wipe the paint mixture off the raised “bumps” of the cornice to enhance the mouldings and shade the cornice.
