I have been quietly obsessing about holographia (specifically holographic fashion) – tracking with growing interest and delight the increasing number of posts on tumblr that feature this trend. My interest was first peaked when I spotted some images of holographic buildings from the “Bilbao Guggenheim Holographic Exhibit” that took place last year. I was transfixed by the images of these buildings that were transformed into glistening iridescent works of holographic art.

It’s a fashion phenomenon that has seemingly exploded in the last year, making it “the hottest” trend that you could possibly reference heading into 2013. One of the first fashion houses to showcase a collection laden with holographic items was Blumarine’s delightfully tongue-in-cheek and ultra-modern Ready-To-Wear Fall/Winter Collection for 2012. The models quite literally dripped in shiny synthetics and the feel was sort of futuristic punk…

And then, as if to put an official stamp to this trend, British fashion heavy-weight Burberry Prorsum presented a Spring/Summer 2013 Collection which celebrated metallic colour and high-sheen fabrications. Again, an extremely progressive and modern silhouette that certainly views as futuristic fashion and yet is definitely not a collection that could be dubbed “punkish”.

Other British designers who have showcased collections that feature the holographic fashion trend are rising fashion stars Jonathan Saunders in his Spring/Summer 2013 Collection and Hussein Chalayan in his Fall/Winter Collection from 2013. Another is one of British fashion’s old guard: Jenny Packham – renowned for creating beautiful, highly wearable and feminine clothing – her frocks from the Spring/Summer 2013 collection groaned under the weight of iridescent embellishment. Not to be outdone by the Brits, German label Hugo Boss also presented a Spring/Summer 2013 collection that was packed full of holographic detail on bags, belts and panel-inserts. Methinks that accessories will most likely be the most popular incarnation of this trend on the streets…

I also discovered this beautiful and feminine offering by designer Paula Selby Avellaneda (a designer that I had not herd of before) which somehow manages to blend this ultra-futuristic trend with the incongruent “Bohemian” styling. LOVED it.

And lastly, another British designer who chose to reference holographia, but not incorporate it into his collection, was designer Christopher Kane whose entire Spring/Summer 2013 Collection was showcased to a holographic backdrop and on a holographic runway, as well as offering a holographic invite to attendees.

Diesel ‘Liquid Space’ Holographic Fashion Show

Holographia and fashion seem to work well together; I came across a Diesel ‘Liquid Space’ Holographic Fashion Show from 2007. No doubt, increasingly we will start to see holographic visuals and elements featuring more prominently in fashion show productions. Especially given the likes of production companies such as Musion who are experts in this area. (Be sure to follow this link and check out their show reel). They are doing some truly exceptional and ground-breaking developments in the field of holographic technology.

With this being such a new trend in fashion and often taking some time to translate into interior trends, I will be sure to be keeping my beady eyes peeled for imagery and homeware as they start popping up… Be sure to look out for the follow-up post in the next quarter!
