You know what South Africans are like… When it’s winter we’re moaning about the weather and longing for hot summer days, and when it’s summer we’re moaning about the heat! Us Mother City dwellers have just had a heat wave this weekend past. Inspired by the sweltering weather, I’m serving up two posts (today and tomorrow) aimed at inspiring you readers with outdoor areas so that you can “beat the heat”.

Today’s post looks at one of my favourite outdoor spaces – one of many rooftop gardens! For CBD dwellers, especially in Jozi town and Cape Town, there is just so much scope to turn a disused roof space into a beautiful repose of greenery… Somewhere to “while away the hours” with a book and cool down under a shelf or shelter of living things (if a body of water is not close at hand):

If you happen to have a community of green-lovers in your building, then perhaps you might want to consider something like this Darmstadt (Germany) residential complex, built in the 1990s. With the plethora of grass, trees and shrubs, it is a nod to “The Hanging Gardens of Babylon” built by King Nebuchadnezzar in 605 BC:

No pressure then 😉 Here’s hoping that whether you find yourself in/on a rooftop garden or noh today, you keep yourself cool…
