Every year we wait with baited breath for the date – in Anne Roselt’s, our global colour manager’s, diary – when the judging of the annual Colour Design Awards takes place. Tuesday 19 July was that day, and I was very happy when Anne invited me to join the team of judges and be part of the process at the Plascon Spaces Showroom.

Each entrant had to identify an existing school or educational institution building, which needed a colourful design intervention, and to show us how they’d use colour to transform it into an environment that uplifts, inspires and empowers.

This year we received 120 entries in total (41 more than in 2015). Due to the large number of entries, there were two rounds of judging, and the top ten entries were chosen out of 42 finalists (the top twenty will be displayed at 100% Design in August, and the top six will be featured in Issue 21 of Plascon SPACES magazine).

The judges – from the left: Donald Nxumalo, Interior Designer | Sumien Brink, Editor in Chief (VISI, Plascon Spaces, and New Media Books) | Leana Schoeman, Editor (Sunday Times Lifestyle Magazine) | Anne Roselt, Global Colour Manager (Plascon) | Jodi Robertson (International Trend Institute (ITI) | Samantha van den Berg (organizer) | Laurence Brick (Platform Creative Agency / 100% Design).

It was great to experience the judging process and to be part of the conversations that take place as each judge explains why they think a particular entry should be shortlisted. One thing was unanimous; the standard of entries this year are outstanding.

The judges shortlisted 10 entries, and the process started all over again. This was no easy task, and with the prizes up for grabs (as per below), the judges wanted to make sure that they made the right decision.
