How to give your dresser a rustic makeover with these household products

A clever paint technique utilising household products sees an unassuming dresser given a rustic, antique feel, transforming it into a real showpiece.

YOU NEED

PAINT: Plascon Double Velvet in Stone Wash (Y2-D2-2) and White. OTHER: Vaseline, a household candle, Heritage Kwik Crack crackle medium, a paintbrush, a metal scraper.

TIME NEEDED

2 hours

STEP 1:

Apply a little Vaseline to the wood where you would expect the paint to wear to create a naturally worn appearance.

STEP 2:

Rub the candle between the areas to which you’ve applied the Vaseline, leaving a layer of wax on the dresser.

STEP 3:

Apply one coat of Stone Wash and allow to dry. Apply the Kwik Crack to the areas of paint that you want to crack and allow to dry.

STEP 4:

Apply the white paint in single brush strokes. When dry, touch up the white areas where the paint has not covered well. Allow to dry overnight, then scrape the paint scraper over the surface to achieve a chipped effect.
