Today we look to North Africa for some interior inspiration, specifically Moroccan interiors. From gentle and light-faded colour to bright and redolent colour, Morocco is a country that offers up a plethora of interior inspiration.

Probably one of the most famous creatives to draw inspiration from Morocco is none other than fashion luminary, Yves St Laurent. In the the 1960s he bought several homes in the country, using these homes for respite from the hustle and bustle of the European socialite scene. He infused his homes with the grandeur and intricate detail that is the hallmark of Moroccan interior design, but together with his decorator Bill Willis, lent a delft hand in the colour application…

Another impressive vintage Moroccan inspired room is that of the Blue Bar in the Berkeley Hotel in London, decorated in soft tones of mauve and blue…

Contemporary reincarnations of this age-old theme feature blue heavily in the colour schemes: shades of turquoise, cerulean, jade and duck-egg blue that lend a soft and romantic ambience to the rooms and which work so well with other soft tones of pink like blush and rose… But they work equally as well with punchier, energetic tones of complementary orange or amber (which is our colour of the month)

Moroccan themes also work exceptionally well in outdoor areas – nothing says relax and enjoy your surroundings like large wicker armchairs, daybeds and coloured bolsters and cushions and swaths of cotton curtains to screen out harsh sun rays… Making one want to linger longer in the outdoors…

However, modern variations on this theme seem to be extremely stringent with their use of colour, relying instead on a white canvas with a few strategic Moroccan décor items and a few colour focal points…
